Understanding IP Addresses and Geolocation
An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique identifier assigned to every device on a network. IPv4 addresses are 32-bit numbers typically displayed as four decimal numbers separated by dots (e.g., 192.168.1.1), supporting about 4.3 billion unique addresses. IP geolocation works by matching IP addresses to physical locations using databases maintained by companies like MaxMind, IP2Location, and regional internet registries. These databases aggregate data from ISPs, regional registries, and other sources to estimate the country, region, and city associated with each IP range. Geolocation accuracy varies — country-level detection is typically 95%+ accurate, but city-level precision can be much lower, especially in rural areas or when VPNs and proxies are in use.
